Mother’s Day is right around the corner. Are you ready yet?
The first North American Mother’s Day was conceptualized with Julia Ward Howe’s Mother’s Day Proclamation in 1870. Despite having penned The Battle Hymn of the Republic 12 years earlier, Howe had become so distraught by the death and carnage of the Civil War that she called on mothers to come together and protest what she saw. She called for an international Mother’s Day celebrating peace and motherhood. I actually thought Mother’s Day was a “Hallmark Holiday” in the same way that people say Valentine’s Day is.
The majority of countries that celebrate Mother’s Day do so on the second Sunday of May. On this day, it is common for Mothers to be lavished with presents and special attention from their families, friends and loved ones.
